Team Store Sale Well Worth the Trip!

Yep. I couldn't help it. Women and "sales" just go together. So I headed to the team store at lunch time yesterday and walked out with a bag full of goodies.
First off, it was nice to see clothing with our logo in something OTHER than orange or blue. It was a toss up between the black jacket or this great pre-washed brown zip hoodie. The hoodie won. It's soft and comfy.
I couldn't help but buy the Islanders Sharp calculator for a big five bucks. It's going to make my office mates laugh every time they see it. And the tee-shirt bundle of hat and shirt for $15 is one of the best deals you can get there. Some one's getting a birthday gift.
I tossed in the rubber bracelet as an after thought, but I actually have had my eye on them for quite some time. Okay, so using my gift cards, I received 10% off my total order. Having reached the $75 platform, the very hard to come by "Pride & Passion" book by Stan Fischler and Point Blank's Chris Botta was thrown in as a bonus.
Let me tell you something. Last year I was trying to find a copy of that book and could only find it used on Amazon.com for the insane price of $200. I asked around, but no one knew where they could locate one for me.
I heard that while cleaning out some areas, cartons of these books arose from the rubble. Lucky for us who didn't have a copy and didn't want to wait until one came up on Ebay for a reasonable price.
GET TO THE TEAM STORE BEFORE THIS PROMO IS DONE! It's WELL worth it.
You can also purchase their Breakaway Bundle package there too. Two tickets, Three Games, Gift card and Food coupons. It's a great deal.
Okay, sales pitch over. But I'm happy with my purchase. Today I get to shop at Pathmark, but I'll spare you THOSE great savings details!

Friday!!!

This, that and the other thing.
It's Friday. Yes, it has finally come

If anyone needs a laugh and a half, and who doesn't these days, just keep watching this YouTube video fo Joe Cocker. You'll laugh yourself sick. I just love it.

Okay, so with All Star weekend starting I guess I'll be glued to NHL.com for the day while I'm working. Don't want to miss any of the hoopla. (right.)

I'm also going to make a stop at the Isles Team store in Massapequa to take advantage of that sale they are running. I've got my gift cards ready. I'm going to make them work for that sale! And since that's the only way I'm getting a copy of that book they're giving away, may as well take advantage.

Maybe I'll skate this weekend. Maybe I'll finally clean the house. Maybe that's a long shot. Just like getting to work on time is a long shot.

All Star Break Withdrawal?

There's no hockey on TV!!! Okay, so instead I watched comedy on NBC, sort of. I can never do one thing only when I'm home so I half watched... and READ about hockey.

Yes, last night was a good night for call-up Kurtis McLean. But doesn't he look like Chris Elliot? No, seriously. That's all I could think of when he was talking in the locker room when asked about getting his first NHL goal.

"... exciting! I'm still feeling the effects. Give all the credit to Yann." then he thought about it "Ill take a little, and having the game winner be my first goal." It was his second game in the big club after being called up on emergency basis. Kurtis was asked how he intended on STAYING up.

"I'll continue my solid play." He already knew he was heading back down to Bridge during the All Star break which seems to improve his play. He talked about having some chemistry with Frans and Tambellini. He is meeting the Sound Tigers in Portland and then going to enjoy a few days of rest during this break.

For the rest of us, we will have to be entertained by the All Star Dog & Pony Show. Okay, that was mean. I know this is big to the NHL and I do enjoy it. But due to the amazing amount of controversy this year, it has been tarnished more than usual.

The ballot fixing, the complaining, the REAL All Stars saying "Thanks but No-Thanks." All these things are making it almost impossible to really get excited about the festivities this year. And this year they have more sponsorship than ever before. Hopefully they have the audience to watch it.

Listening to NHL Live and other shows on XM Home Ice, the fans have some great ideas about improving this showcase of our brightest stars. With luck, the NHL will review some of them at their next BOG meeting.

The All-Star game was supposed to be for the fans, but it originally was played at the BEGINNING of the season, not mid season when healthy bodies are of the utmost importance. And of course, what's the most entertaining portion of the weekend? The Skills Competition. So why not work on that more than the "game" itself.

Everyone has their ideas, and so many of them are good ones.

NHL.com will have great coverage of the events all weekend and don't forget that we DO have one All-Star representing the Islanders. So log on, turn on, and support Mark Streit this year. My favorite inside joke about the All-Star game for the last two years is, "When Jason Blake went, the word of the day was "Aloof." When Ricky went, the word was "Elusive." I wonder what the word of the day with Streit will be. Guess we'll have to watch to find out.

Night all.

Surprise! they changed the ending of the movie

As usual, I turn off my machine and pack up with just a few minutes left to go in the third so that I'm ready to head downstairs at game's end. Well, wasn't I pleasantly surprised by the 2 points, the first of the year, that the Islanders managed to get out of this game.

The Shots on Goal discrepancy was bizarre, but a win is a win and Gordon was at least smiling. I have plenty of notes from the locker room, but it's 11 pm and I returned home to no husband in the house and a 14-year-old who does nothing. So there are three loads of laundry to be folded and dishes in the sink. First things first.

Yeah! We won. YEAH! Yann Can Do as Brad Kurtzberg from Inside Hockey told me in the press room.

Sorry I didn't get to meet Adam Brady, the Ducks team PR guy and blogger. You may want to check out their site tomorrow for his take on the game. The man is very talented. I was hoping for a live blog from him tonight, but he was in the stands as a fan.

And lastly, before I attend to my motherly chores, I'd like to say that today I found out that someone I was very close to is also no longer with the Islanders. These things happen in business, and business decisions are made because they need to be. They are never pleasant. The thing that I hate about having to lose a friend from the team is the emotional connection I lose. That is what gives me the ability to always be positive and always try to find the bright spot. It's just the mother in me.

I do this for "love." That's what I was told I was paid in. And I never minded it. Actually, I'm happy with that. But now that I've lost yet another emotional connection to this team, I'm incredibly sad.

I'll have to make sure from here on in I don't get close to anyone whose last name begins with a "B." That being said, I'm sure Garth is putting together a package for picks and on that list he has penciled in my boy Sean. I just have that feeling.

Dear Garth, if that's the case, you will leave me absolutely no choice. TAG!!! You're IT!

Talk tomorrow.

And we're ON!

9:17 pm, Park with a tripping penalty takes a seat in the box. This would be where they tie it up and then beat us 3 - 2. with 5:03 left in the 3rd. I guess maybe I should start packing up. I've actually seen this movie before.

9:15 pm and they are still up 2 - 1 but SOG are now 37 to 13 in the Ducks favor. Give it up to Yann Danis for doing a good job in net so far. Mind you, I said so far.

9:10 pm : Do we get anything for having Mclean get into the net? Does that count for a goal? Um... Guess not, but what an effort.

9:05 pm and nothing is really happening here. Nothing to see here right now. Very little excitement to speak of. But the sign guys in 219 are here with new signs. I really need to get in touch with them and interview them.

Well, it's 8:57 pm, and the shows are 13 to 31. Let's play those numbers shall we! Jeff Tambellini continues to shoot.... wide.

With 3:28 left, the Ducks finally are on the scoreboard with a goal by Bobby Ryan. They have 30 SOG and the Islanders have 13. Well, it was a Power Play goal. But as of the 57.6 sec mark of the 2nd, they are still up by 1. Let's see if they can go to the dressing room that way. And they did.

It was Kyle adding to his stats tonight along with call up Mclean for his first goal. Frans has two assists so far this evening. Let's see if he can get a 3 point night.

Hey Look... It's Ryan Getzlaf:

For the Ducks, Jonas Hiller is in net and that would leave Giguere in the hallway on a barstool. Wish I was in section 113X. I hear Giguere had a little hissy fit when he was removed from net... And I missed it!

Will we come away with two points tonight? Well, one more period to find out. But I can tell you the big Ranger fan in front of the Blog box may end up with a point tonight.... of my pen... in his ear. He is for some reason SPEAKING to us in a very RUDE manner.

SECURITY!!!

A Day of Politics Large & Small

Today history was made with the swearing in of the 44th President of the United States. The 44th time a peaceful transfer of power of a nation has been concluded. The fact that this transfer of power is to the first African American President in our little more than two hundred year history makes it all that more noteworthy.

Understanding the magnitude of the ceremony, Barack Obama walked to the podium stifling the smile that was in his head. Pomp and circumstance and a wind that died down just in time. He took the oath of office on Lincoln's bible held by his wife. Proving his humanity, he screwed it up. It was called a "hinge point in history" as the country basically stopped functioning in order to watch.

The Lord's Prayer was said aloud on the White House steps. Our newest President will need all the prayers he can get. There was cannon fire, not gun shots that rang out in celebration. He called America to arms to "pick up, dust off and begin work of remaking America."

Last night Bono said the US had become irrelevant to Europeans. This election has changed that, according to him. The world knows we are a different sort of nation made up of multiple cultures. "Our patchwork history is a strength, not a weakness." Obama said emphatically. He welcomed dialog with other nations but warned terrorists "You cannot out last us, and we will defeat you."

So many obstacles; so many problems facing the nation as he takes office. I did not vote for him, but as President, I will indeed stand behind him.

Okay! More LOCAL politics as the Lighthouse and Town of Hempstead become a more 'hot button' issue with Islanders fans, I found Point Blank's morning's entry fascinating as he interviewed Kevin Gorman, the 2007 nominee for TOH Supervisor who lost by a 2 to 1 margin to Kate Murray.

I've never been more intrigued by Long Island town politics as I am now by this project. But I will say, it seems to make us, Long Island as a whole, quite laughable as other towns, cities and states build magnificent facilities and generate jobs for their residents in a third of the time that this project has already been on the table. I've heard of dragging one's feet, but this has been a large mistake considering the change in the economy over the last five years.

So then that brings us to the new Kansas City facility that is wooing our lone major sports franchise. It's like having a really good looking man, with a great job and a five carat diamond in his pocket searching for a fiance. He just took a look at our girl who is a little tired of getting jerked around waiting and waiting. Can you blame them for taking a look at each other on the dance floor? Not on your life.
Thanks to the passionate fans of the NY Islanders for speaking up. And thanks to an amazing woman with a camera at the right place.

Ovechkin 2 - Isles 1, Witt -27

Yes, I ditched out of the blog during the third period to go sit with friends in another section. The period seemed to go quite fast. I looked up and it was at the 10 minute mark. I waited for a whistle that didn't come until there were less than 3 minutes left. I had to run back to the box and pack up the laptop.

So what did I see in the third period? I saw a lot of missed opportunities. I watched as either shots were going wide or were hit right at Theordore's chest. I watched Josh Bailey set up some good opportunities, that went unrewarded.

I watched Yann Danis make some really good saves, and one really dumb move that he managed to save by diving on the puck.
I watched Alexander Ovechkin play when he wants to. He sits back and waits for the right time. That's probably why he's so damn good. And then I watched the Islanders managed to tie the game with Okposo Nielsen and Streit gaining to their point totals. It was a five on three power play. If they couldn't score that way, they shouldn't be playing the game.

A point. They managed ONE point. I ran back to the blog box and watched the remaining minutes of the game. There was hope. Real hope to win this game. And all that hope disappeared as soon as there was a slashing call on Brendon Witt. Back in the box he went and back to the net went Ovechkin. Say goodnight Yann.

We waited in Press Room 6 for what seemed like forever. There was light snow falling outside and I was wondering if I could get home before it was dark. Stan Fischler was once again at the front of the pack asking the questions, but today Scott seemed somewhat more relaxed. He even told a few stories instead of cutting off his responses.

Perhaps he's getting used to the press corps, perhaps he read somewhere that he had thin skin (an observation I don't agree with), or perhaps he's just getting used to facing the crowd after a loss. This is becoming a habit. But he felt that since they were held to one goal in regulation, it was a good effort.

Interesting that when asked about the play of Yann Danis, Scott hesitated for quite awhile and said he'd have to review the tape. He admitted that he made some good saves but that he does have concerns. "if you're playing against a team that's that good, like a Boston or a Washington, you certainly can't give up the easy ones."

Gordon gave kudos to call ups Kurtis Mclean and Jack Hillen. He was quick to praise the work of Capuano to make sure the Sound Tiger call ups are ready to play on this team. The consistency is key. Finding the back of the net would be a better "key."

Once again, Danis was light hearted in the locker room with the cameras and microphones pressed into his face. "The puck went through me. I have to work on that." was his explanation of the first Power Play goal that #8 put right by him.

"It feels good for the point. There are positives to come out of this game. We're getting shots on net." Twenty-eight to be exact. He was asked if he felt any pressure about his play and he said he didn't put that sort of pressure on himself since he knows he doesn't have a guaranteed spot on the team. And then I wondered; who is chasing him? Mannino?

Kyle, the long goal scorer said they were trying to hard and that's why the shots were going wide. "We're not looking up. So focused on getting to the net. We have to keep working, We've been right in there. Our chances will come."

Mclean then entered the room to be grilled. "Keep it simple, get deep, get to the net." (Sounds simple doesn't it?) "Ovie -- he can shoot the puck. You gotta be right on him. Witter was tough on him."

Yeah, well, Witter was the Zebra's focus since he kept getting the calls. Ovechkin may have sold the last penalty that resulted in the game winner by playing up the broken stick. He contends Witt broke it. Many of us can't be sure.

And then I looked up to the door and noticed that Jon Sim was freshly dressed and leaving.... long before his team mates.

MLK Day at the Coliseum

3:32 pm: As usual the bright spot in the stands is Dina the Arena Hostess doing the movie trivia game in section 201. The contestant won.

With one minute left of the 2nd, the Islanders did pressure the caps in their own end, but we are still at 1 - 0. And that's how we'll start the third.

3:25 pm: well, no additional score yet, and only a few chances. Gotta say, it's pretty funny when Yann looks behind him to see where the puck is and then realizes, he made the save. Good for you Yann!

3:09 pm: Let's explore this. Hillen had a great shot but didn't score. Jackman is banging around the boards, so was Comeau whom I thought might have hurt himself, but he didn't. Martinek went to shoot the puck and somehow it acted like a boomerang and come right back at his face, and Sim was on the ice... I think.

We're still at 1 - 0. But it looks like it's getting to be a pretty physical game.

Oh, and Nassau County varsity ** won the Lighthouse Cup. Congrats to them. **Scratch that! It was a SUFFOLK COUNTY WIN! Thank you Katrina!

3:03 pm: Danis makes a save he didn't even know he made.

3:02 pm Start of the second with SOG at 14 - 11 and so far, no additional injuries. Ha ha. Oddly now that Jose Theodore is in the net that Danis was just in, the light is now off.

2:39 pm. "Boring period." Some chances but nothing really to speak of. But Katrina Doell from the Lighthouse project stopped by to chat. Always great to speak with her. Always make sure you check out her Lightpost blog for all the latest information on the project.

SOG are now 12 - 8 Capitals. But Yann has been making some good saves. It could be worse.

Josh just had a few really good set ups, but no one could capitalize on the caps net being WIDE open!

And the upper bowl is packed. Nice crowd for a day game.

Well, Trent Hunter is out with a lacerated hand giving Bridgeport's Kurtis McClean a turn on the Coliseum ice. Nice to see Jack Hillen back as well. Let's see if he has developed any under Capuano.

I've been asked for my prediction and all I could say was "loss." Day game. Not a good thing in Islanders Country. I also do not have my mouse with me so I will have a problem with this computer. But at least I do have the camera! And batteries. Hopefully the team's batteries are fully charged as well.

And there's Ovechkin just skating around at his leisure. Someone I know predicted Ovie hat trick by the second period. He looks a little lazy today. Maybe that won't happen.

Oh, I sadly couldn't hear Point Blank's Chris Botta being interviewed by CJ Papa for MSG Plus, but I'm sure he did the same excellent job for the Lighthouse as he did on his ESPN Hockey show with Don LaGreca.

At 13:49 of the first, Witt took a Penalty for taking down Ovie in the corner at 13:49 of the first, and just a few seconds later, Alexander the Great makes him pay for it by scoring his 30th goal of the season.

Isles Team Store: Going Out of Business Sale?

Wait? Could they be preparing to liquidate for the move to KC??

OH! Sorry, I made a mistake there. I pulled a Newsday. I wanted to see if I wrote a 'sensational' headline if my hit count will increase. Let's see if it works.

Actually the Islanders team store is going OUT FOR business. And with a very special and worthwhile promotion.

If you buy $75 worth of gear in the store you will be presented with a copy of "Pride & Passion" authored by Stan Fischler and someone you all know very well, Chris Botta. Yep, the best of the Islanders reporters is also an author, we already know he's an accomplished writer.

But the Islanders have sweetened the deal even more. (Maybe in preparation for Valentine's day?) If you use a gift card for your purchase, they will give you another 10% off. Hey! That's like having a no clip coupon! It also pays for what the people that gave you those holiday gift cards had to pay in order to GIVE you that gift card! SWEET!!!

So stop by one of the team stores and stock up. Come on. I know they're tanking right now, but you won't change your alliance. You're Islanders fans. You will always be Islanders fans. And the gear that I saw when I visited the Massapequa store was wonderful.

And hey... so if they DO move to Kansas City or Nevada or Suffolk County (I wish I wish I wish) you'll have collector's items. But for now, you can just wear them and enjoy them. And since reading is fundamental, you'll probably fundamentally enjoy your free copy of that book!
