Happy Fans Meet Bailey & MacDonald

The line was wrapped nicely within the stanchions when I arrived at the Broadway Mall tonight. There were some familiar faces, those who like me, attend just about everything. But there were also a lot of younger fans there. Actually, it looked like a meeting of the Josh Bailey Fan Club. But I looked around and did find a few fans that may have been there during the dynasty years.

For instance, Norm was waiting patiently holding a hockey stick as tall as me. He also is the first person I know that has the same 14K gold logo necklace I have. He bought his in the 80s, mine is a little newer, but he remembered the jeweler’s name where he bought it. Amazing!

“How do I feel about Nino? I was hoping more for size. But I have confidence in Garth and his staff. They know what they’re doing. And that steal could be that Russian Kid. But in fee agency: Maxine Afinogenov. That’s who I want and I bothered him all last year about it. Oh, and bring Andy back. Maybe he’ll sign for less because he likes it here. And he gives us the physical presence on the ice.”

Chris and Paul had arrived at the same time I did, so they were towards the back of the line. Chris had his jersey slung over his shoulder as it was a little too hot to wear it. While they weren't able to watch the draft, they already knew how to say Nino Nieddereiter without stalling. When I asked what their hopes for a free agent were, I received the typical fan sentiment.

“I hope they can pick up someone good. Maybe a veteran.” When I asked Chris if he wanted a defenseman or a center he said “Either or.” Then Paul chimed in with “Someone who has a lot of endurance. They keep dying out in the third. “But experience and leadership is what Chris is looking for as he hopes Doug Weight is rehabbed from his surgery.

In the back of the store, Josh Bailey and Andy MacDonald were stationed at a table laden with stickers and pencils and cards and two boxes of sharpies in different colors. I watched at three girls who came together giggled and smiled while they waited to head to the table. After they had their jerseys signed, I followed them outside. When I asked Allie, Katie and Justine if Josh Bailey was their favorite player, I received a resounding “Oh my God yes!”

They’ve been Islander fans since Justine dragged them to games “Because my Dad and brother are really into it.” Katie gave her up though “She’s got a Josh Bailey shine.” Justine blushed. I told her not to worry, it was understandable. They already knew about new first rounder Nino and bad-boy Kiril and were looking forward to the prospect scrimmage.

Back inside the store, four young ladies were admiring the new John Tavares figurine
while waiting to get to the table. I couldn’t help but overhear. “I have to have this! My birthday is coming. I want this for my birthday!” The tall young woman sporting the John Tavares 91 tee shirt implored her friends. Alex’s birthday is August 24th and she LOVES John Tavares. But along with Alex was Madeline clutching her jersey and today was HER birthday. I made the suggestion that Josh should sign “Happy Birthday Madeline, From Josh.”

She loved the idea, or so I believed by the open mouth gasp I got for the suggestion. Josh was only too happy to oblige. Sadly I didn’t get the name of the other happy friend whose birthday is July 10th and will be celebrating it at the Blue & Orange Scrimmage at the Coliseum.

Once all the happy fans were done, I took a few minutes to talk to Josh and Andy some questions. Of course, I had to start with checking out Josh’s souvenir from April. Yes, that gash on his cheek is leaving a scar. “I kinda like it. I’m gonna keep it.” Josh smiled at me when I asked him if he was putting vitamin E on it. It won’t take away from his smile.

I asked their thoughts on the draft this year and whether it brings back memories of his draft experience. “I’m pretty excited from talking to Snowy and Jankowski. They’re all really excited, so that mean’s we’re excited.” Eric Cairns and the rest of the scouting staff are also very excited about this year’s selections. It was two years ago (for Josh) so it’s pretty easy to relive that moment. It’s probably one of the most exciting moments of my life, for me and my family. I’m always good to think about it.”

I asked Andy MacDonald if he felt there was too much pressure on the players who have to sit there and wait to see if their name is called. “It’s definitely tough as a player. Especially for guys that are supposed to go in the first few rounds and maybe they drop a little bit. It’s just part of the process; just something you have to go through. “

The truth is, not every player who is invited to the draft will actually be drafted by an NHL club and there are many players who have had success in the NHL who were NOT drafted as a youngster. “Just because you DON’T get drafted doesn’t mean you’re not going to make it. So, it’s exciting to go and get drafted, but there are tons of guys out there that don’t. It is nerve wracking as a player.”

Josh Bailey related the best way of looking at the draft from a player’s point of view. “The best line I was told about the draft is ‘You’re not any better of a player of worse of a player what number you’re picked. You’re the same player no matter what.’" He’s right.

As far as being a 17 year-old coming to Long Island Josh could only say “Long Island is a great place to play. Luckily, I’ve been here for two years now and I’m excited for the third year and many years to come. It’s my home now. I could never say enough good things about Long Island.”

A-Mac had some good advice. “Especially as a 17-year-old, it’s probably a little overwhelming coming to the biggest city in North America. I mean, it IS New York. But you’ve just got to play your game and go out there and do what you do. You’re not supposed to change anything when you come. You’re just supposed to do what you do that got you as far as you are.”

Yesterday was also Canada Day and Andy told me I was only the second person in the store to mention that, but since hockey fans in the USA thought of it as Free Agency day, I asked Andy if he remembered the day being exciting for him as a fan. “As a younger fan, it was a pretty cool day. You knew guys were going to go different places and as a kid you always hoped guys would go to your favorite team. Now, after playing in the league, you hope you can land a good player. It’s an exciting time. There’s a lot going on and you just take it all in.”

On this day, Josh Bailey was busy taking in meeting the members of his fan club and they all left happy.

Next player signing will be Blake Comeau on July 6th at the team store in the Sunrise Mall. On July 13th, Kyle Okposo will be at the Broadway Mall and on July 28th Jack Hillen will be in Massapequa. Mark your calendars.

Josh & A-Mac At Broadway Mall

And I have some photos of some very happy fans, and you'll have to wait until tomorrow because I just ran out of time.

Long day waiting for something to happen, but nothing did. Well, nothing except Jeff Tambellini signing a two way contract with Vancouver for the league minimum. Eric Nystrom signing with Minnesota and Tim Jackman went somewhere (TSN isn't updated) and Marty Biron is now going to get his butt kicked as a Ranger. Just kidding Marty. Congrats and good luck. At least we'll still be seeing you at the Barn.

And here is one photo for Jaimie and one for Matt.
Article coming tomorrow.

Canda Day is UFA Day for the NHL

It's like throwing darts with a blindfold! That's how I feel about trying to figure out who the best UFA for the NY Islanders could be or who Garth Snow is targeting. But as everyone else has put in their two cents worth, I knew I had to do the same. So, for your amusement, my ideas for free agency 2010 here at HockeyBuzz.

First Rounder No Guarantee

His name is Robert Nilsson. He was drafted by the NY Islanders in 2003 in the first round, 15th overall. This year, the LA Kings took Derek Forbort at 15th. Peter Holland was drafted by Anaheim in 2009 and Erik Karlsson was drafted by Ottawa in 2008. Number 15, the middle of the pack and no guarantees.

Robert Nilsson played 53 games for the NY Islanders in 2005 and 29 games in Bridgeport. He scored 14 goals and 34 assists that year. Not too bad for a rookie season. But it wasn’t enough to keep him on the Islanders. It was, however, enough for Edmonton as they took the package of Robert Nilsson, Ryan O’Marra and the 2007 draft pick for Captain Canada, Ryan Smith. There were those that said the Islanders overpaid for what turned out to be the rental of Ryan Smith, but Nilsson played only four games with the Edmonton Oilers and 19 in their AHL affiliate from March to April of 2007 after playing 50 in Bridgeport that season. Perhaps he didn’t even unpack that year and wasn't sure where he was waking up.

In 2007-2008 he played 71 games in Edmonton and only 5 in their AHL affiliate. It was his time to shine, and he did -- to a point. Nilsson scored 10 goals and 31 assists for Edmonton that season. Was he no longer the kid rumored to be moody with a less than stellar work ethic?

In April of 2008, the Oilers signed Nilsson to a three year contract. In January of 2009, he suffered a concussion. From looking at his stats page, it seems he suffered a few that kept him sidelined again in November and December of 2009 as well as April of 2010.

Last season he still managed to play 60 games but only came away with 27 points with 11 goals and was a -17. Nilsson has struggled with his consistency all along. Perhaps he hasn’t changed at all. Perhaps it is his work ethic or perhaps the spark of talent that everyone saw in 2003 never seemed to grow.

At only 25, he is owed $2.5 million for the last year of his contract. The Oilers have placed him on waivers to pave the way to buy him out. With only five years of NHL experience, would anyone think a team would be ready to buy out a young, first round draft pick?

It seems a shame that someone that had so much promise in 2003 would be in this position only seven years later. Let’s hope our draftees don’t end up with the same fate.

On the other end of the spectrum, with 14 years in the NHL and one more year left on his contract at $3 million, this first rounder of 1993 (11th overall) could face a similiar fate. Will he be put on waivers to pave the way to be bought out, will he continue to play in Bridgeport or will the NY Islanders be able to package him in a deal?

End of the Line for Bergie & Tamby?

Today, the Islanders have tendered qualifying offers to Matt Moulson, Rob Schremp, Dustin Kohn, Dylan Reese and Nathan Lawson.

As of Thursday, July 1, those players who have received qualifying offers will have until Thursday, July 15 to accept. The deadline for players to elect to go to salary arbitration is Monday, July 5. If a player rejects the qualifying offer, but does not elect to go to salary arbitration, the Islanders will still retain their rights until and agreement is made or they become eligible for unrestricted free-agency.

That leaves Sean Bergenheim and Jeff Tambellini to become free agents. Is anyone surprised?

Tambellini spent a lot of time out of the line up and being a spectator. When he was inserted into Scott Gordon's line-up, it was out of sheer necessity. But the success never came. Jeff Tambellini, with Dynasty bloodlines, could never recreate the success of his AHL career on the NHL ice.

The 5'11" winger from Calgary has been in the NHL for five seasons. Jeff played 36 games this season and had 7 goals and 7 assists for his $625,000. In the 2008-2009 season he earned 15 points in 65 NHL games and in 2007-2008 he played 31 NHL games and scored once and had three assists. Scott Gordon seemed to have lost all confidence in Jeff. Perhaps a change of scenery will help him.

Sean Bergenheim has always been one of my favorites. He will remain so. However, he has never quite accomplished what everyone expected he should. I saw him as a 20 goal scorer from the first time I saw him in an Islanders sweater when he was only 18.

Bergenhiem was drafted 22nd overall in 2002 and this is also his fifth year in the NHL. In 63 games Sean scored 10 goals and tallied 13 assists. The only time Bergenheim got close to the 20 goals I expected of him was in the 2005-2006 season in Bridgeport when he played 55 games and scored 25 goals and 22 assists.

His biggest drawback is inconsistency. It wasn't long ago that Scott Gordon told reporters in a post-game interview But Scott did continue. "With Bergie it's always consistency. He can skate, he can protect the puck, he can finish hits, he's got a good shot, but if he's not doing those things, he's just an average player. And 'average' isn't good enough for Bergie. Bergie has to excel in the areas that are his strengths and when he does -- that's when he has success."

It was then I knew that his days with the NY Islanders were numbered. And don't think that Garth Snow didn't attempt to get something for the high-energy kid from Finland who never quite received the same 1st round hype as those that came after him. This is the same young man that Scott Bowman praised. Hopefully he'll find a new home where he can feel appreciated.

Hopefully, it's in the NHL. If not -- well, there's always the Swedish Elite League. He had some success there with 33 points and 80 PIMs in 2006, and their season is much shorter.

As sad as I am to see "My Boy Sean" leave the Island, in my heart I know, it will probably be the best thing for him.

With the 2010 Entry Draft done, there are still so many questions leading up to Thursday's Free Agency Frenzy. It may be an exciting time for fans, but it has to be a nerve wracking time for those making the decisions.

Draft Party Notes 2010

I wanted to share with you a few photos that I took from Friday night's big party at the Coliseum. I missed LAST year's draft party with 10,000 fans attending. I can't even imagine what that was like. This had over 2,000 fans and it was a wild time. Everyone was having a great time.

Thank you so much to ALL the Islanders staff that managed to keep order and everyone happy. It was great to see so many friends and make some new ones. I was happy to see CJ Papa and Arena Hostess Dino up on stage. She even looks good in a Gillies Stache.

The fans went wild seeing Gillies, Moulson and JT modeling the new jerseys. I don't know if they were happier to just see the boys or just loved the new sweaters that much. But the rousing applause was deafening.

I have to admit -- they look damn good!

The Isles sales staff had a table in front of one of the media stations. OkposoNet.com's Ken Dick and I kept trying to figure out which Isles prospects were at the table. Turns out they were new Isles sales reps. I think the office staff is trying to stack the deck for their in house hockey league.

And then the moment we were all waiting for, when Garth Snow announced the newest prospect to wear an Islanders sweater. And I screamed.

By the time I found the IceCreeps.com booth, the sound levels were off the charts. But Mike managed to get this video with his HD Flip (which seems to be a ton better than my Sony Webbie, I'm just saying!)

As it was also Blog Box Audition night, Johnny Z from YES!Islanders did a great job with this montage of Isles fans from the evening.

And here's a video of Nino's one handed goal from HockeyHub.net

Well, okay then. Time for me to get ready for work and start my week.

Everyone getting ready for Free-Agency day? It used to be the day I dreaded most, but now I don't seem to be as fearful as usual. Maybe I'm getting used to the way the NHL works. You'd think I should by now, right?

Draft Class 2007

So the article I really want to write is taken longer than I expected. More than likely because of the extreme headache that I have tonight. So here's just a quick hit on the prospects in the system that were taken in the 2007 draft here.

And now... I gotta sleep and pray I don't wake up with this headache!
