Be back in a few with an Off The Rush postgame report.
7:24 pm with 5:03 remaining and the SOG at 28 - 27, the Flyers are still winning by only one goal. I knew this would be a low scoring game, but like Big Angry Man just texted me, "You can't win a game with one f---ing goal." No. You can't.
little note also, so the NHL officials up here now installed TiVo so they can rewind stuff to the second and make sure what they put out is accurate. Pretty cool!
7:13 pm: Robbie Schremp made some very pretty moves with the puck all the way around the net, behind the net to the left side. Nice dancing. Too bad the pass to Hunter in front of the net was fanned on. It may have gone in and tied the game. So what happens? Well, Trent Hunter gets angry and there's an altercation in front of the Flyers bench. Asham, I remember him, and Van Riemsdyk are in the box for the Flyers and Trent for the Isles. Islander Power Play again. Let's see if they can actually SCORE this time. Nope... There goes Mike Richards with the puck into the Isles zone. with 45 seconds left of the penalty JT gets the puck and does nothing with it. back in the Isles zone. He coughs it up again. So much for the possibility of tieing it up.
7:10 pm: You know it's bad when your power play gets booed and then JT got knocked on his butt. They should start declining penalties.
7:05 pm: Matt Moulson lets a puck slip right by him and I cringed. Then he came back wiht it and took another shot at Leighton -- right in his crest. Where's the magic Matt?
Pronger in the box for boarding on Trent Hunter and the Isles are on the Power Play. Let's see if they can even it up ... um... or not.
6:59 pm: And the Play is Under Review as the Flyers make it 3 - 1 while Marty is on his back like a turtle. They say it was kicked in. I doubt Toronto will see it that way. Briere may earn his money today.
Well, what do you know. Toronto said YES, it WAS a distinct kicking motion that earned that goal. NO GOAL. Score remains 2 - 1 Flyers.
Okay boys. You just got a late Christmas present. Unless you can do something with it, you'll still lose.
Start of third and I'm freezing up here. Why is it so much colder up here today? Why? Isles still down 2 - 1 and the crowd cheers Lets Go Islanders for the first time today!
6:30 pm: Sim and Carcillo in the box for Roughing. At least they are both in. But once again, there will be a fresh sheet of ice and 1:06 both teams being down a man.
6:30 pm: And that's TWO by the Flyers as Jeff Carter manages to sneak one by the right side of the net just along the post after Sutton laid down to block a shot that turned into a pass to Carter. This will be another low scoring game I'm sure.
A little pushing and shoving of Jackman in the Flyer's crease and no calls.
6:20 pm: Tim Jackman is called for tripping and sits in the box while the Islanders are back on the penalty kill. SOG are 20 - 19 in favor of the Isles. and I'm getting very nervous here. Thompson tried to clear from his belly but couldn't. and just as the penalty expired, the puck goes over the net and play is stopped.
yeah.... they did it again. That should help there PK stat a little.
6:15 PM: Dear Matt: Please stop trying to shoot from the Blue Line. I don't give a crap what Billy Jaffe said. You're not shooting as hard as Streit so all you're doing is making Leighton look good!!! Luckily Biron is making some saves on the other end of the ice.
6:04 pm: And the hard work of Jon Sim pays off as he ties the game at 1 - 1, his fourth of the year with assists by Schremp and Streit. On the other end of the ice while they are announcing the good news, Biron makes a save... Thank GOD!
Start of the Second. Well, they managed to kill off the 1:11 of that penalty to Blake Comeau, so I guess that means he won't be benched for the rest of the game. Luckily most of the action has been in the Flyers zone, but the Isles are still down by one. Trent Hunter had some interesting footwork behind the net but couldn't connect with anyone's tape to bang it in on Leighton.
End of First: Well, the Isles will have to kill off 1:11 of Blake Comeau's tripping penalty when they return. Which basically means they may end up down by two in the first minute of the second period. It's possible.
Nice crowd here for a Holiday Sunday. I don't think they brought the Flyer's Booster club this time. I think.
I also found out that the league guys here don't keep track of how many sticks break per game. They should, because someone needs to be responsible for it. it's rediculous. He told me to contact the league. Like I won't! HA!
5:39 pm: First Matt takes a pretty weak shot on Leighton that he stopped easily and with less than one minute left of the period, Comeau takes a tripping penalty that will either cost them being down by 2 heading into the locker room or being on the penalty kill with a fresh sheet of ice.
5:35 pm: John Tavares coughed up the puck and immediately left the ice leaving Matt Moulson, who was heading for goal #16 out on the ice. I'm not very happy about that one. Nor am I happy that Carcillo just whacked Tim Jackman for his hit on Bartulis. Both players head to the box for roughing. 5:31 pm: Dear Marty: I really like you but how about a stop with no rebound? Huh? Maybe? You're allowed to hold onto the puck. They'll let you. I'm also wondering if the ice isn't too soft as there have been quite a few players just losing an edge and going down on their own.
5:26 pm: There was a collective gasp as Mark Streit's shot from the blue line just grazed the inside of the crease infront of the post before going wide. Had it been just an inch to the right, it would have tied the game.
#14, Ian LaPerriere tried to goad Trent Hunter into an altercation. He chased him all over the ice yapping at him until Carcillo skated into Hunter. The whistle blew, but no penalties were called.... damn it.
5:21 pm: Streit with a new stick and an 83 mph shot is stopped by #49 on the Flyers end. The SOG are now 8 - 5 in the Islanders favor, so it's not as if they aren't pressuring them. Um... until now....Hartnell got a nice shot off on Biron and Sutton gave away the puck. Should we just count the errors? We know day games have never really been good to the Islanders. Right? Oh, wait. Scott Gordon did challenge me on that one before since he seems to remember every single GAME!
5:18 pm: Well it took no time before the Flyers were up by 1. This may be another one of those games. Interesting that every time Kyle Okposo has the puck, the crowd cheers. He also needs to tigheten his helmet as it wen flying off. Oh... And Streit broke another stick. Is someone counting these stick breaks? how many are there per game?
5:10 pm: It's Marty Biron against Michael Leighton tonight, and me with my new Netbook. Please excuse the typos while I get used to the keyboard and the new touch pad.
Okay, nice chance by Thompson coming in on the right wall and up to Leighton. But the Flyers already have 3 SOG and it's only 18:23 of the first.
