Post Season: Tim Jackman

I had the opportunity to speak with so many of the players on Monday that I'll have to do this in pieces. The first of the group is on Tim Jackman and it can be found here at HockeyBuzz.

You don't realize how much you can get out of two to three minutes with each player until you try to go back and transcribe it all!

On another note I'd like to say Hi and Congrats to my friend, CJ Papa.

While waiting to see if a fire in Sayville yesterday made it to News12 I was pleasantly surprised to see CJ Papa doing the sports report for News12. You realize what this means, don't you? The Islanders may actually get some DECENT coverage over there. Now... if we can just infiltrate the other news outlets, maybe the team can get some on-air time!

Hey CJ! Nice job on the Yankee's World Series rings. Maybe someday you can do one on Islanders's Stanley Cup rings! Yeah... I'm a dreamer.

Flyes @ Islanders 5 pm on a Sunday

ugghh... more family time for this Islanders blogger. Will I be able to quietly sit on the couch with my headphones to my XM radio in and listen to the game without anyone knowing?

I doubt it. And as much as I have been given a free ride with my family about how much time I spend on hockey and how much time away from the family I spend, this week ain't one of them.

Now, there is only one single point separating the Isles and Flyers in the standings. Here we have another game that is incredibly important to both teams. They have split the last two they have played.

Will there be 12 buses full of Flyers fans at the Coliseum today? If there are, then I will be pleased as punch not to be there. I still have nightmares about the time a fan yelled at my family from their bus and my husband, looking to protect his wife and daughter, tossed a pretzel at the window and yelled back a challenge. I swear the bus began to rumble and shake. Had the doors been open, I think we would have been killed. Big Angry Man was just annoyed he wasted a good hot pretzel on a Flyers fan. (Remember when they used to actually have HOT grilled pretzels OUTSIDE the Coliseum??? Yummy.)

Tim Jackman, while back in the line-up, may not be 100% healthy as he had less than 10 minutes of ice time against the Rangers and no altercations. To be fair, Jon Sim had 10:22 of ice time. Jack Hillen was the work horse with a whopping 28:36 TOI. Not bad for a youngster. Garth Snow was on Toronto's 640AM station a few days ago talking about Hillen's development. I'll transcribe that later today.

But most importantly, the Islanders need a win in their building today to remove the bitter taste of the last few losses. Sure they beat the Leafs on Wednesday, but home wins are what bring back the fans. So make it so Islanders and help get you closer to that respectable over .500 mark.

Off The Rush 12-11-09

So, of course the minute I uploaded this video this afternoon, I get a text message about Tim Jackman not expected to play for one to two weeks, and neither is Sean. But the good news is Andy Sutton will be in the line-up tomorrow.

Okay, lots to transcribe from today at the rink, but you can watch this in the meantime. Sadly my co-host Anthony couldn't be with me in person, but we should be back together on Sunday, weather permitting.

"Wildly" Disappointing in MN

The Excel Energy Center is one a great building. With so many family members and friends of Okposo, Hillen and Jackman, there were plenty of Islanders jerseys to be seen last night. But while the homecoming for the Minnesota boys may have been pleasant, the outcome for the Islanders last night left their coach almost speechless.

"I'm not going to talk to them right now." Gordon glared at MSG's Rob Carlin when he asked him immediately after the game what he said to the team after losing 3 - 2 with only 1:07 left of the third on a bad turnover that left Owen Nolan all alone with Marty Biron.

Nolan, the man drafted the same year that John Tavares was born, was even more surprised than Biron that he was given that gift of a goal by the Islanders. It was his second for the game. Actually, I think the FIRST goal of the game was a gift by Marty Biron too.

According to NHL statistics, the team that scores first has the upper hand in winning the game. It proved true last night as the Wild were the first on the scoreboard at 11:44 in the first on a wrist shot by Nolan for his fifth goal of the season. So the first and the last both belonged to the 37 year old veteran from Belfast.

The Minnesota Wild haven't been doing as well as their sold out crowds would like, but the NY Islanders, who lost their seventh game in that building, gave the crowd of over 18,000 a surprise ending. Jon Sim had tied the game at one with his second goal of the season at 3:07 in the second and Josh Bailey, while on his knees, made it 2 - 1 at the 10:23 mark with a shot that went over Backstrom. Yep, for all intents and purposes, it looked like it was going to be Lucky Seven and the Islanders would win this game.

But this is the NHL and no lead is safe and you don't know who wins until the final buzzer. Bad penalties and bad turnovers plagued the Islanders and while the Penalty Kill is getting way too much practice killing off five on three scenarios, the Power Play isn't doing what it needs to. "We had great chances on the Power Play and didn't bury them." Gordon told Rob in the post game. But the loss boiled down to one thing, "Turnovers. That's all it was."

#NotoriousNateThompson night wasn't as huge a success on Twitter as #MightyMattMoulson night, but it was still interesting considering Nate started things off with a fight with Nathan Smith early in the first period. I'm sure the league will be happy to know Nate's helmet never left his head. Nate ended the night with 12:31 in ice time, one fight, three blocked shots, one Hit and a 56% win ratio in the face off circle.

Tim Jackman and Shane Hnidy decided to get into it late in the second which got the home town crowd even more excited. Jackman may not be the best fighter in the league, but he may be the most intense. By the time it was over, he had Hnidy face down on the ice and looked like he was doing everything in his power not to just keep going.

So for all the press about Tavares and Clutterbuck it seemed to be a non-factor in the game. There were no amazing Tavares moves last night, no brilliant goals. In all honesty, the game was a little on the dull side. Not to say that there weren't bright spots, there were.

I actually noticed Andrew MacDonald this game. Jon Sim has to be recognized for his hard work, no matter how disappointed Islander fans may be in his past performance. As Gordon said last night, Sim is "a guy, if we can get him on a roll, would be a huge asset to the team."

The Hillen and Okposo families shared a luxury suite last night for the game, sadly they didn't get to celebrate a win, but I'm sure they all had a good time anyway. Too bad the boys couldn't stick around as they are off to St. Louis for tonight's match up against the Blues.

No time to sulk over the loss. Time to just come out ready to play. This one is history. Let's just forget it.

Post Game 5-4 Canes over Isles

Bruno on a caffeine high gets his second goal and does an interview with CJ Papa that sounded like it was recorded at the wrong speed. Did he even breathe?

Tambellini thumped one of the Canes into the boards and he bounced. It was a real shock. It was Tamby doing it.

Streit gets another personal point with an assist and time Jackman gets two.

Rechlicz is just an animal... but one that can actually skate and play hockey. Even though he playe only a little over 7 minutes.

Okposo and Nielsen had a great game, each with a goal and an assist, but seriously the Chia Beards (as Jaffe called them) have to go.

Park, wearing special padding to protect his recovering ribs, not only scored but also took a hit that made me hold my breath.

Dean gets hooked, the officials miss it, and he ends up in the box giving the canes a 2 man advantage in the final two minutes. "Dean McAmmand has earned that kind of respect to have the officials let him have his say. He cares. The kind of guy you want on your team." Bill Jaffe.

I hate to say I'm glad they lost. That's not the way I want to feel. But in these last dozen games, we can't lose sight of the big picture.

They're playing better than we could have ever hoped. But they can't will themselves into a playoff berth. They can't roll over either. But losing is seriously in our best interest. I'm sorry Peter Mannino.

First Day of Spring and Finally an Islander Game

Just like our Islanders, this winter refuses to give up. As Spring 2009 arrives, it'll be greeted by cold winds and light snow. The crocuses that are up in my yard defy the cold March air and laugh at it. Spring will not be stopped, and the end of the Islanders '08 - '09 season is imminent.

Yesterday, as I was driving to work, Scott Gordon was on 92.3 FM for an interview before the morning practice and afternoon flight. (Yes, I can hear the radio station where I live.) The DJ who was interviewing Gordon was not a sports reporter. The questions he was asking seemed foolish. But Gordon answered them with his usual stoic grace. This was the second Gordon radio interview I caught in the last few days. My comment that at least I didn't have to raise the volume on my radio to ten, the way I have to when our GM is on the radio, got me in a little trouble. But trouble likes to follow me anyway.

Tim Jackman was rewarded for all his hard work with a one-year contract extension. That made everyone in Islanders Country pretty happy. This extension is a no-brainer for sure and not the surprise moves I am used to from our GM.

Talk has sprung up about Kyle Okposo's plans for Spring. Should he skate for Jack Capuano's Bridgeport Squad? Should he be tagged for a stint with Team USA? Sorry Jack. My personal opinion is let him skate for his country, should he be asked of course. Now, that may make Josh Bailey a little miffed since he was not allowed to represent his country at the World Juniors, but come on, there's a great Canadian hockey player born every minute. When we find an American born hockey player with the goods, especially one with Kyle's bloodlines, then we have to show him off a little.

Isles vs. Robo-Hockey player Rod Brind'Amour and the Canes at 7pm. My pizza and I will be waiting.

They Said They'd Be Back!!!!

I couldn't take it any longer. I had looked at the calendar and noticed that I was nowhere near being able to see a live game until Wednesday the 25th. This was not doing my soul any good.

I checked the practice schedule and headed to Iceworks this morning at 11 am for no good reason other than it was calling to me.

No laptop, no camera, no ulterior motive. Just me and a box of oatmeal raisin cookies.

For some reason, many of the plastic bleachers are broken. Considering how much money they've sunk into the place, I was really surprised and saddened by that. I took a spot on the bleachers center ice and just watched.

It was so good to see Doug Weight out on the ice in a yellow jersey. That's the "Don't touch me yet!" jersey, right? But he was working up a sweat, getting back to his old self, keeping up with the kids.

It's amazing how much fun Kyle looks like he has out there. I know that he and Josh Bailey are young, but they do look like they have fun even when they are working.

Also good to see on the ice was Andy Sutton. He was NOT in a yellow jersey. You can't miss Sutton as he is at least a head taller than everyone else. But he looked good.

Also looking good, and not as despondent as I would have expected was Bruno Gervais. He was skating by himself center ice, practicing his backwards defense moves. He really does skate beautifully.

Jackman was trying desperately to get a puck over the netting to a group of kids that were there. He finally tossed it over a doorway instead. He and his toothless grin made the boys very happy.

I was made very happy but a smiling Sean Bergenheim that stopped me to say Hello. When I asked him how he was doing, he smiled broadly. "Good. I'm feeling good. I should be back on the ice soon!"

I told him to hurry up.

Scott Gordon was taking his time today really talking to them. They surrounded him in a huddle listening intently.

I took a deep breath of the cold air, and headed back out to my car to head back to work. It was just a quick fix to get me to Friday.

Hopefully. Although I really wish I had remembered my damn camera! But Newsday DOES have a VIDEO!

Tampa over Isles 1 - 0

It took until 6:26 of the third before the red light lit. One goal gets passed Yann Danis for a one goal lead. Roberts deflected the puck into the net. And yes, it was a huge goal. Up until then, it had been a pretty non-eventful game.

It started off with a bang and a fight with Jackman and Smaby going toe to toe because of the last game where Jackman took liberties with Vinny. Guerin was a five minute major for fighting with Malone. Everyone was very pleased to see the way Guerin stepped up. Everyone but Big Angry Man who took the opportunity to harass me that Guerin had to step in for Sean Bergenheim. As valiant as it was for Billy, is as embarrassing as it was for Bergy. I've heard this all night.

With 2:34 to go in the third Okposo takes a penalty for a hooking call. Not a good move.

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THE MSG BROADCAST!!! They keep losing the feed and it goes to something that sounds like a Ham radio.

With 2:14 left, the Islanders are 2 men down as Park takes a penalty for high sticking on Malone. You just have to be in control of your stick. Especially at this point in the game. But they have a habit of crashing and burning in the third.

With less than 30 seconds left in the 3rd, Kyle breaks loose of the penalty box and takes off towards Tampa's net with a breakaway. I held my breath, but McKenna stopped that one too. The AHL goalie from Vegas gets the shut out. (I hope he's from Vegas. That's what someone on Twitter said, and I didn't check it!)

The highlight of my evening of Islanders Game night at home was the Wine Barrel Special Fondue. I had asked the husband what he wanted for dinner. For some reason he said something I haven't made in years. I think he's just afraid I'm going to forget what the hell is in it.

When I owned the Wine Barrel in Babylon Village years and years ago, one of the signature items was the Wine Barrel Special Fondue. It tastes wonderful, it's artery clogging and looks awful. Actually as I had to make vats of this stuff and clean it up when it was cold, it was lovingly called "Puppy got sick."

I guess because it's almost our anniversary, he's getting nostalgic. So I made it. If anyone likes fondue, this is something that is very homey, but it needs to be made in a crock pot and then transferred to a fondue pot.

1 lb Velveeta cubed

1 lb American cheese cubed

1 cup tomato juice

1 cup DRY white wine

squeeze lemon juice

1 package Lipton onion soup mix.

Heat in crock pot until smooth stirring occasionally. Do not let burn.

Serve in fondue pot with cubed bread, pepperoni, apple slices and ravioli or pirogi.

That was the highlight of my night. I wonder what the highlight of the Islanders' night was. Maybe dinner with the Dads.

Have a good flight home boys. Tuesday is another day.

MLK Day at the Coliseum

3:32 pm: As usual the bright spot in the stands is Dina the Arena Hostess doing the movie trivia game in section 201. The contestant won.

With one minute left of the 2nd, the Islanders did pressure the caps in their own end, but we are still at 1 - 0. And that's how we'll start the third.

3:25 pm: well, no additional score yet, and only a few chances. Gotta say, it's pretty funny when Yann looks behind him to see where the puck is and then realizes, he made the save. Good for you Yann!

3:09 pm: Let's explore this. Hillen had a great shot but didn't score. Jackman is banging around the boards, so was Comeau whom I thought might have hurt himself, but he didn't. Martinek went to shoot the puck and somehow it acted like a boomerang and come right back at his face, and Sim was on the ice... I think.

We're still at 1 - 0. But it looks like it's getting to be a pretty physical game.

Oh, and Nassau County varsity ** won the Lighthouse Cup. Congrats to them. **Scratch that! It was a SUFFOLK COUNTY WIN! Thank you Katrina!

3:03 pm: Danis makes a save he didn't even know he made.





3:02 pm Start of the second with SOG at 14 - 11 and so far, no additional injuries. Ha ha. Oddly now that Jose Theodore is in the net that Danis was just in, the light is now off.





2:39 pm. "Boring period." Some chances but nothing really to speak of. But Katrina Doell from the Lighthouse project stopped by to chat. Always great to speak with her. Always make sure you check out her Lightpost blog for all the latest information on the project.

SOG are now 12 - 8 Capitals. But Yann has been making some good saves. It could be worse.

Josh just had a few really good set ups, but no one could capitalize on the caps net being WIDE open!


And the upper bowl is packed. Nice crowd for a day game.

Well, Trent Hunter is out with a lacerated hand giving Bridgeport's Kurtis McClean a turn on the Coliseum ice. Nice to see Jack Hillen back as well. Let's see if he has developed any under Capuano.

I've been asked for my prediction and all I could say was "loss." Day game. Not a good thing in Islanders Country. I also do not have my mouse with me so I will have a problem with this computer. But at least I do have the camera! And batteries. Hopefully the team's batteries are fully charged as well.

And there's Ovechkin just skating around at his leisure. Someone I know predicted Ovie hat trick by the second period. He looks a little lazy today. Maybe that won't happen.

Oh, I sadly couldn't hear Point Blank's Chris Botta being interviewed by CJ Papa for MSG Plus, but I'm sure he did the same excellent job for the Lighthouse as he did on his ESPN Hockey show with Don LaGreca.

At 13:49 of the first, Witt took a Penalty for taking down Ovie in the corner at 13:49 of the first, and just a few seconds later, Alexander the Great makes him pay for it by scoring his 30th goal of the season.

High Noon in Boston 11-28-08 (Blogging from the couch)

The number of that truck is #17. Milan Lucic, the 20 year-old 6'4" left winger is hell bent on hitting as many Islanders as he can. First he took down Colliton in front of the Isles bench and got a tongue lashing from Witt. Then he gave Jackman yet another gash on his face when he crushed him into the boards during the last few minutes of the first period.

There was no penalty called, when there really should have been. It took Jackman a few minutes to get to his skates, and Lucic waited around waiting for something to happen--anything. No penalty, and no real retaliation. He skated away satisfied with himself.

The story of the first few minutes of the game has to be Nate Thompson in his first game back from sports hernia surgery. He's been solid with no signs of rest and tallied the first goal. I was amazed as the cameras followed him for what seemed like minutes, all alone in the Boston zone.

I'm still hoping for Bailey to get his first NHL goal, and considering how well the fore checking has been so far, it's a strong possibility today may be the day.

With a penalty called on Tambellini Boston scores on the power play to even it up. Why #12 was allowed to keep poking at the puck in Joye's pads, I don't know. But he did.

I was going to say we can start a new drinking game called the "Jon Sim shoots wide" game because I think he's missed at least five really good chances. But then I felt bad when he ran to the locker room with a towel on his face stopping the bleeding from somewhere. Sorry Jon.

At 11:36, it was almost 2 -1, but the cross bar is your friend, so with SOG even up right now at 14, Joey makes a very lucky save to keep the score even as well when the puck just bounces all the way to him on some bad ice.

Tambellini takes a second penalty for high sticking because he wasn't watching what was happening behind the net.

And again, the audio levels on MSG Plus HD are variable. (I'm going deaf, no I'm not. I'm going deaf, I'm cured. FIX IT DAMN IT!!!

Boston gets 3 SOG during that penalty and they caught a break since MacDonald lost the puck with no whistle, until he finally fell on it to freeze it.

Boston's Ryder makes it 2 - 1 at 4:44 of the second unassisted. Well, actually, the assist was from the giveaway by Brendan Witt, but they can't use that.

With less than 30 seconds left of the 2nd, the Islanders go on the power play, but the SOG are now a very UNeven 23 - 16 in favor of the Bruins. Joey has been getting far too much work.

Start of the third, and 2 SOG if that during their power play. As Danno came to sit with me, he called it. "Good teams would score here. The Islanders won't." Well, they didn't.

Dan keeps calling for Campoli to get back on the ferry. Having him say that whle watching him turn over the puck made it that mjuch more painful. Lucky for Campy, Joey has been in great position. He should buy him dinner when this is over.

At 13:22 Billy Guerin gets a break away, but Fernandez gets a toe on it and it hits the boards. At 13:12, Blake Wheeler flies to the other end of the ice and beats MacDonald to make it 3 - 1. The momentum seriously shifts.

Ten seconds later, Krejci makes it 4 -1 and by 12:40, Peter Maninno makes his NHL debut. What an afternoon. It was great to see Gordon speak to Joey when he came back tot he bench, and top off the conversation with a pat on the shoulder pad and a "Good job." MacDonald has been playing very well. But he can't save them all. No goalie really can.

At 10:50, when the Bruins made it 5 - 1 Witt decides to continue his conversation with Lucic. This time with his fists. Sadly, Witt seems to get the worst of it. Not to be outdone, Jackman and Hnidy square off and that one gets quite bloody to say the least.

Once they get back to playing hockey, Richard Park adds to the Isles score on a power play. But with 8 minutes left, it's more a personal bonus than a team victory.

With the SOG now 23 - 36 with only a little more than five minutes left in the third, I'm wondering how high it can go.

Ryder beats Maninno and makes it 6-2 on the power play. Not the debut he was looking for, I'm sure.

To add insult to insult, Lucic made it 7 - 2 and Joey MacDonald blew a gasket on the bench. The defense is leaving this kid out to dry. And they did.

AS if I didn't think they'd lose a day game. Back on the bus boys. You've got a game tomorrow too. Shake it off.

Just a note: Scott Gordon said something I found to be very telling when asked how he felt about MacDonald's play of late. "He's been what every teams #1 goalie HAS to be."

Now if they can get the rest of the team to play the way they're supposed.

The "Third" Story 11-8-08

"I've seen this movie before. The Islanders lose."
That's what Big Angry Man said to me as we were well into the third and the Islanders had ZERO shots on goal for the period. The stats were actually 18 - 0 before Tambellini finally broke the drought at 17:46 of the 3rd.

Uggghh!!! As I opted to stay home with my husband to watch this game, and since I don't have a valid Internet connection in the house right now, I watched the game and took notes. Ten pages of them to be exact. It certainly is different watching a game on my big screen with B.A.M. and being able to hear Bill Jaffe's commentary. I actually paid attention and noticed all sorts of things I probably would have otherwise missed.

Let's start with MSG Plus first. What the heck is the problem with the volume on the HD channels? What is it? Mime? But oddly the commercials are blasting when they're on. And BTW, this no pre-game show for the Islanders while the Rangers and Devils have one is sheer and utter BS. If the evil Dolan empire wants to say there is no interest in our pre-game show then prove to me there is interest in the Rangers telecast.

Also, there is now some sort of High School Sports portion during the first intermission. Now, while I'm all for high school sports information, why is it airing during my hockey game? MSG already cut out my pre-game, they jump right into their Hockey Night Live thing as soon as the game is over, and now they added High School Sports info too? Are you begging me to go to Satellite service? Are you? And PS, adding Butch Goring to your round table after game discussions does not make this a post Islander game broadcast. (Although I will say I do enjoy watching the guy who looks like Bon Jovi. But then again, anything sitting next to Ken Daneko would be handsome.)

Okay, enough bitching about MSG. The good things about the broadcast were Stan Fischler's subway token tie and the fact that CJ Papa has found his broadcast comfort zone, just as I knew he would.

BTW, the wine at my house is much better than that at the Coliseum (cheaper too) and the Chicken Parm Pizza on the second level is to die for! But I digress.

This was undoubtedly Andy Sutton's best game. He was a pleasure to watch all evening. I did notice one little thing early in the first period that I couldn't get an answer on because it seems no one else saw it. But I watched a linesman grab Sutton's jersey as he was skating past him. I wish I was in the Blog Box with IslesOfficial Doug to ask him what that was all about. There was no call, no whistle and play didn't stop, but he was slowed up a little by that move.

Also, I noticed Crosby's stick sweep up over Sutton's head and knock his helmet forward, again no call. If you can get a stick up to big Andy's head, shouldn't that be a call? Again, where's Doug when I need him?

It's painfully obvious that B.A.M. hasn't been watching many games this season yet as he turned to me a few times asking who was wearing what number. "Who's number eleven?"

"Hilbert." I said wondering if he was just testing me, but he wasn't. I'm scared. He remembered him when he scored that back-hander while in the paint to make it 3 - 1.

Congratulations to Tim Jackman on his first goal of the season and third NHL goal of his career. He was a big part of this game tonight. Okay, the pleasant parts that is.

Doug Weight was proving that he's definitely not too old for this league and Jon Sim seemed invisible. Did he actually play tonight? The stat sheets says he played 12:26, but I didn't hear his name called ONCE by Billy or Howie. He was invisible.

No disrespect to our star goalie, but I am enjoying watching Joey MacDonald thrive. There are no antics in the crease, no theatrics and no wandering. Just saves. I just wish the rest of the team wouldn't let him become one big target every time they get to the third period. Is this what Joey actually signed up for? I think not.

The penalties were another story to the game. Some of them seemed marginal and infuriated Scott Gordon behind the bench.

For two minutes, let's put aside the fact that the team seems to fall asleep in the third period until there is under a minute left. I'd like to just mention that it seems the ice conditions in the Coliseum play a big part in these games. The puck bounces all over the place and won't settle down. I watched three players hit the ice without any help from the opposition and with only 35 seconds of the third left Sabourin went down behind his own net.

I've been in that building during the day when there are very few people in there; I've been in there when it's packed to the rafters. It's too damn WARM. When I can sit comfortably in a long sleeve shirt and never once look for my fleece, there's a problem. Ice conditions are a specific science. People spend years perfecting methods for optimum conditions. The Coliseum doesn't seem to have the concern other arenas have for this important part of the game. More should be done to improve ice conditions at the Coliseum which will not only improve the game but also protect those who play it.

I'm surprised that Sean Bergenheim didn't score a goal tonight since I was not personally in attendance. I did panic just a little when he absorbed impact with Hal Gill and went back on the bench in considerable pain. I'll admit, my heart raced a little. We seriously can't afford more injuries.

Sidney Crosby didn't seem like his usual amazing self this evening, and Okposo seems to be trying to do too much. Nielsen and Tambellini played their hearts out but this wasn't the outcome they were working for.

Everyone seems to be complaining about Gordon's shoot-out choices, but let's also remember that our old Mr. Shoot-Out didn't score on MacDonald. But yes, perhaps next time they wander into the shoot out forum, let the young guns have a go and leave the old work horses watching from the bench.
