Isles vs. Leafs 12-23-09

11:51 pm: Well, the Islnaders managed to pull a win out of their hats tonight and two points were their early Christmas gift. And Charles Wang may have an 11th hour gift of his own from Tom Suozzi as Newsday is reporting the County want to grant a sublease so that the Islanders would take control of the Coliseum from SMG. Lovely thought, isn't it?

4:16 left, it's time for me to start packing up.

Will see you post game!

7:43 remaining: Jason Blake takes a penalty and is applauded for heading to the box. The Islanders power play needs to come up big here. Matt is getting pushed around in front of the net, but he is standing his ground against Jeff Finger.
The puck grazed the size of the net and everyone thoguht it was going in. Sadly... no.

Gentlemen, please take harder shots on goal. Thank you.

Kyle is so strong, he made it all the way to the net and got a shot off, Nielse tried for the rebound. They were applauded for their effort. See? THat's all the fans want! An extended effort. If they lose and give their all, it's totally different than losing without showing any passion to win. Penalty expired, and the song over the speakers is "It's a New Day..." Nice touch.

12:16 of the 3rd: We knew it wouldn't last forever. Witt in the Box for Cross checking and the Islanders are on the penalty kill trying desperatly to make sure the Leafs don't even up the score at two. So far Rolson has made two excellent saves and given up no rebound. Can it last for the balance of the 1:30?

As the third begins... the Isles can't hold onto the full lead. It's now been cut in half and all the skating seems to be in the Isles end once again. There's something about the third.

End of 2nd: With a flurry of activity in Rolie's end of the ice at the last minue, he makes a lovely save to lead the Islanders back to the dressing room up 2 - 0. Of course there is still 20 minutes of hockey to play and it's anyone's game. We know how they can be in the third. Hopefully, we won't have a repeat performance.

When I had asked Scott Allen how he was going to fix the power play, he told me "Socre." Well. I guess Trent Hunter was his star pupil today.

PS: Garth Snow on 640AM Toronto today had some great things to say about both Robbie Schremp and Jack Hillen. One of which was that Hillen is an excelent skater. And I always thought he skated funny. Obviuosly... I don't know how defensemen should skate. But he's doing an excellent job for someone so young.

7:42 of the second: Nice pass from behind the net. Tavares was where he should be. Not a pretty goal, but a beautiful goal! Isles 2 - 0.

Second period: Well, as if by Wizardy, seriious Wizardy, the Isles are up 1 -0 on a Trent Hunter power play goal. Within seconds, the puck is in Rolson's net. However, (again! Miracles working) it is waived off as it was sent in with a high stick. And my boy Jason was on camera yelling "f**k." Sorry baby. Not that one.

With under a minute left after killing off a penalty, Jon Sim has a small breakaway that the Monster comes out of net to meet. Needless to say... they head back to the dressing rooms 0 - 0.

2:21 left of 1st: John Tavares has a beautiful chance to skating up on the Monster's left and ... shoots wide... The puck comes back towards Roloson and ... Mr. Sockless takes a holding penalty. Special teams once again.

8:08 left of the first: Yes, some beautiful chances for the Isles as the SOG are 5 - 2 but they can't make anythikng go in. I will say this... Blake is still a blurr on the ice. He hasn't lost his step.

Also, please be aware there has been issued a press release regarding ticket exchange for Saturday's blizzard game. I will post the full text later.... or you can probably read PB. Since they made the biggest noise about it.

Useless piece of information. Jon Sim does not wear socks with his skates.
I told you it was useless.

And hopefully Santa comes to town EARLY and delivers a nice big WIN!

Here I am at the Coliseum high atop the ice, having one hell of a good day.
We have Rolsoon in net for the Isles and the "monster" on the other end. Yes, two days before Christmas the crowd is quite sparse as everyone is doing their last minute shopping and preparation, but the show must go on.

I was here today for the morning skate and listened to Scott Gordon talk about how he is happy with thier play five on five. But they are snakebitten in special teams.

Meanwhile, in the opening minutes of the first on a Power Play, I'm watching matt Moulson get mugged in front of the net and miss a beautiful opportunity to score.

Snake bitten isn'te the word as Kyle Okposo hits the post and the puck bounces back at him. He takes another shot and the cookie monster eats it up.
