Professional Hockey In Brooklyn

So tonight the Islanders face the Montreal Canadiens for the first of two meetings this week to close out the month of October. I'll be updating the Hockeybuzz.com site as information comes over Twitter from our Newsday beatwriter, Katie Strang who has made the trip.

Michael Grabner didn't make the trip and will skate here on the Island trying to get back into the line-up. So, since I have nothing else this morning I've decided on this:

I received this press release a few days ago and thought it may be worthwhile to pass along for all those who are NY residents. There IS hockey in Brooklyn and it isn't the relocated Islanders. Nope.

BROOKLYN, NY – OCT. 20, 2010 – The New York Aviators professional hockey team will play a 60-game schedule this season from October 29-March 12 as members of the new 6-team Federal Hockey League (FHL). The Aviators 30-home games will be played at the Aviator Sports & Events Center located at 3159 Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn’s new Floyd Bennett Field (exit 11S off Belt Pkwy).

Coached by Rob Miller, the Aviators open the 2010-11 season on Oct. 29 with a road game against the Danbury (CT) Whalers. They will play seven road games before opening a four game home stand against the Broome County Barons on Nov. 12 at 7:05 pm.

Special promotional nights include “Thirsty Thursdays” with discounted beverages and “Family Four Pack Saturdays” offering fans four box seats, four hot dogs and four sodas for just $48. Parking is free and all concessions and souvenirs are reasonably priced.

“I really think that New York hockey fans will enjoy the aggressive brand of hockey that the Aviators plan to play this season,” said Nick Fotiu, the Staten Island native who played 15 seasons in the NHL, most notably for his hometown New York Rangers. “Minor league hockey is a great way for fans to see the heart, passion and desire of the game up close and personal.”
