6:40 am: Well, less than 24 hours later and the reviews on the Wiz trade are mixed. Some agree it was better to get "the going rate" for the 26-year-old than to watch him walk for nothing. Others are angry and playing out scenarios in their head as to why he was voted off the Island.
It's never easy. Now, while I wasn't given any real "insight" into the "why" of the trade, I was told (just as Wisniewski said to Art Staple in today's Newsday) there were no problems and no hard feelings. It all had to do with Andy MacDonald and Travis Hamonic being the best defensive pairing so far.
This reminds me a lot of when the Islanders traded Marc Andre Bergeron. Then too, reactions were mixed and everyone complained that there would be no one to quarterback the power play with that shot from the point that could break glass. Trouble was, that shot usually broke glass because it didn't hit the net very often. Take a good look at the Islanders power play stats. Okay then.
Sadly James Wisniewski's brief stay with the Islanders may be remembered more for his hand gesture than his shot on the power play. And while he may have lead the team in assists, he was still a -18. That's hockey.
Considering the 7 - 2 loss suffered at the Garden on Monday, I'm thinking it really doesn't matter who is in net today to face the Penguins. I'm sorry. I am not holding out too much hope for this game tonight. Not the way the Penguins have been playing on their road to the Winter Classic.
While the last match between the Islanders and Pens had to be decided by overtime, I'm not seeing tonight's game having to take more than 60 minutes -- perhaps even less. But it will be the last game at the Coliseum for quite awhile as the Islanders will play their next five on the road beginning in Detroit. While I don't expect them to win, I'd like to at least think they will have a respectable loss. Oh, and Jiggs MacDonald will be in town and on the road trip to cover for Howie Rose.
With the trade of Wisniewski, the chatter started regarding who could be next as well as who could be picked up. Tempers flared as fans tossed around the idea of picking up Brian Rolston off the waiver wire. While a competent veteran presence, Rolston's 2 years and $5 million salary make him less than desirable for so many teams.
My own temper flared when the thought of trading soon to be unrestricted free agent Matt Moulson hit the Twitter feed. Matt Moulson hasn't scored a goal since December 16th. He has 11 goals so far and 18 points, but is a -10. He also has a house with his still new bridge in Connecticut and a very comfortable relationship here on the Island. I can't think of any reason to trade away Matt Moulson. I don't know what anyone could offer that could replace everything he is to the Islander line-up. The Islanders will work hard at keeping Matt her for the long term. (And then I will finally get a new number for my necklace.)

"Leadership Is a Big Part"
So where is it?
The Captain returned for another season, but he has been invisible since he was listed as having back spasms and yesterday was announced as being put on IR retroactive to his original injury date.
I will not lay this "slump" the size of the Grand Canyon at Doug Weight's feet, but as Rob McGowan and many of my blog box buddies have mentioned, the lack of veteran leadership on the team is a key factor.
It is not that they were not SUPPOSED to be on this team when it was built in September. They just are not here. This is not the first time that a team of AHL rookies have had to step up and get the Islanders to at least be able to compete. But it seems sadly different this season.
As my husband put it as he came home to see the latest of the Islander loses, a 5 - 0 shut out to the Nashville Predators: "This is the worst Islanders team EVER." Strong words, but he is one of those Islanders Dynasty era die-hards that just can't stomach the losing streak.
Neither it seems can James Wisniewski. If chemistry is as important as it has been said to be, then we can see why this team is struggling. "I know for me personally, I've had about six (defense) partners."
Yeah. And many of the partners he's had are like green corn: Just not ready yet.
You don't want to use the 149 man games lost before last night's game as an excuse? It has to be. This team was supposed to have a very different look to it when the schedule first came out. WE were supposed to see a break-out season for so many of the "young core players." We were supposed to have another All-Star year for Mark Streit. Doug Weight, who has more experience in the NHL and international competition than the current roster times two, was supposed to guide the youngsters and develop their winning ways.
It's December, the NY Islanders do not have a chance to climb so far out of this hole that they can snag an eight place playoff berth and that is sad and definitely was not part of the plan.
Sadly, that means the plan now, with the December 19th roster freeze looming, needs to be change. Maybe there is a veteran presence out there who is not happy where he is, who has one or two years remaining on a large contract for a team that needs some cap relief. Maybe he could fit nicely in a locker room filled with kids just nearly of drinking age. Maybe.
If that player is out there, can someone please contact the NY Islanders and let them know.
Kudos to #MightyMattMoulson who played with a banged up knee so as not to ruin his streak of consecutive games. Also to Rob Schremp who has played only about 65 games in the NHL who played yesterday with a left eye partially closed from the stick to the face. Bruno played in a full cage to protect that busted cheek bone of his.
This is a team of walking wounded and rookies. This isn't the team that was supposed to be playing the NHL (not AHL) 2010-2011 season. Let's remember that.

Sunday @ The Coli With Mascots
8:39 pm: Well, after the game, after dinner, after cleaning the kitche, after writing up a very painful entry, the postgame thoughts can be found here at Hockeybuzz.com.

An afternoon game in December when there is a Giants football game on is not the best use of scheduling, but here we are anyway.
Yes, the attendance police will use this one as fodder for relocation once again I am sure. Especially with @BrooksieNYP and his call for the NHL to force Charles Wang to sell the team.
Down at Doolan's this blogger finally got to meet a superstar in the Islanders blogosphere, SB Nation's, Mr. LighthouseHockey himself, Dominic. Also there were Islesblogger.com Mike, IslesOfficial Doug, (& his Dad) and @Dani3boyz,

The puck drops and I hardly notice. Brad Kurtzburg from Inside Hockey.com and I chat while play is under way. We missed only two Islander shots on goal.
With Giroux in the box, the Isles fail to get a shot on goal during the power play, let alone a goal.
With 25 seconds left of the Power Play, Blake Comeau takes a tripping penalty leaving the team short handed for 1:35. To make matters worse, Matt Marin loses his stick.
At even strength Jeff Carter gets a lucky break as the puck banks off Roloson's bent knee and behind him into the net.
It looks like the refs like "hooking" as the call dujour and Jack Hillen headed to the box. By the time he got out, the Flyers didn't score again and had added only a handful of shots on goal for a total of 8 while the Islanders with only 1:12 left of the first have only three. But then again, it's hard to put shots on net when you're short handed.
Once again, Dwayne Roloson has been the star of the first period along with a lucky break here and there when pucks hit the post.

During the first intermission, the Mascots have an intense game of musical chairs. Just like their team, who seems to be even worse (currently) than the Isles, the Devils mascot was the first one tossed out of the game. Bounced in the first round... Who'da thought? It came down to a battle between Sparky and Storm. Two guesses, Sparky won. But it is his birthday. (Today is also Johnny Rzeznik's 45th birthday
Second period begins much the way the first ended: Slow. Rob Schremp took a high sticking penalty and the Islanders actually had a short handed chance when Eaton took the puck all the way to Bobrovsky's crease. It almost went in. Almost. As Brad told me, Mark Eaton doesn't have a point yet this season and he has played in every game.
Another good chance came when Frans Nielsen stole the puck and skated it towards the Flyers net and shot and another miss. But hey, they at least look like they have a little more pep in the second.
Okay, let's look for a Good News Dept.: Both Kyle Okposo and Milan Jurcina skated today. Could Kyle's return be a Christmas gift to the fans? Please Santa? Please!
Roli takes offense when he is smacked in the mask by a stick while he was down in the crease making a save. Don't get the old man angry.
With Matt Carle in the box, the Islanders go back on the power play. By this time, they should start declining them. The Flyers take another penalty and are down two men for about ten seconds as Nodl went to the box. The Flyers have blocked everything the Islanders have been able to get off their sticks.

With less than a minute remaining on the Isles power play, the Flyers have a short handed chance that went off Roli's post. Lucky again. With the power plays over, the Isles added eight shots on Bobrovsky during their power plays that brings them to 0 for 35. If you can't score when you are on the advantage, something is very wrong.

Role reversal: Travis Hamonic with a shot from the blue line and Rob Schremp with a hit in the corner.

Third period and the Isles have 21 SOG to the FLyers 17, but the Flyers are still up by 1 in this less than exciting game. It hurts me to no end to hear some that are paid to be here complain about having to be here. They are best to remember that there are plenty who would take their place for far less. But back to the ice.
If something would just happen on the ice. And there's the goal horn as PA Parenteau takes a pass from Schremp and deposits it in the back of Bobrovsky's net. That is the Isles first goal in 111.02 minutes and it has tied the game.
Thank you PA.
Within a few seconds after Laviolette called a time out, Frans Nielsen scored his first goal since October 30th as he skated up the right boards and shot it past the Flyers goalie who had no idea it went behind him. With his first point of the year, Mark Eaton is finally on the score sheet with an assist.
I panicked when Matt Moulson was sent to the box. I knew it couldn't be good. Roloson killed off almost the entire penalty when with only six seconds left, Nodl tied it at two. Travis Hamonic couldn't handle clearing a rebound on Roli's doorstep and that was all it took to end the Islanders' lead.

Zenon Konopka drawss a penalty on Ville Leino for tripping and the Islanders go on the power play for their last chance to tie the game and get a point. Hamonic gets a shot on goal that is turned aside. Every time the Islanders try to skate the puck in, the Flyers manage to clear it. Penalty ends, teams at full strengh and 1:57 remain in a game that will see the Flyers leave the Coliseum with two points and a lot of kids whose only joy today was seeing a gaggle of furry, big headed mascots.
The Isles play again on Thursday in Boston. This leaves them another long layover between games. Jack has to come up with something to fire this team up. And it better be quick.
At 5:44 left of the third, mighty-mite Danny Briere give the Flyers their lead as he got by both Hillen and Nielsen and lifted one over Roli and skated away gloating. Jack Capuano looks frustrated behind the bench.
Hamonic and A-Mac tried to create a spark by going after Hartnell against the boards behind Roli's net. Not much time left to get a fire going with that little spark.

A Perfect Seven -- Losses
Well, it's late and I did manage to write something over here at HockeyBuzz.com. Tomorrow morning I will have my far mor fluffier piece and photos about my night at the barn, the last one I'll spend there for a few weeks as the Isles head to California.
Okay, actually I'm smart enough to save some of the items to tide me over for a few days since they don't play again until Wednesday in Anaheim.
And with that -- and what feels like I broke my finger somehow -- I'm saying Good Night.
Congrats Matt Moulson on the Islanders lone goal, his sixth. Also congrats to James Wisniewski the Sharp player for the month of October.

Tim Horton's Is Coming!!!

Turnovers. It was because of turnovers. And they weren't apple. But forget the 5 - 3 loss in Montreal for a moment, there's BIGGER news!!! Tim Horton's is coming to Long Island! But you've have to go to the Coliseum in order to line up for a Canadian cup-of-joe.
In honor of the opening, the Islanders took a 1/2 page ad in today's Newsday with a very special offer of $20.10 tickets for Friday's game against - oh no - The Montreal Canadiens.
There's even one of those funky codes you can scan in order to get your tickets and Newsday subscribers get first crack at best available seating.
I will be there, with cash. Please tell me they're also bringing the maple glazed donuts. Please!
Back to hockey: According to Katie Strang of Newsday in her morning report James Wisniewski is not happy about the officiating of last night's game. Specifically the two minute penalty for a boarding call that Moen received. While I seriously didn't think Wisniewski would return to the ice after his head hit the boards, he managed to hardly miss a shift and leave with three points and a headache. But he professes that sort of thing needs to be taken out of the game. When a guy is defenseless against the boards, you can't skate in and smash his head into the dasher. How about just trying to steal the puck? How about that?
Dwayne Roloson shared Wisniewski's feelings about the officiating and said that sort of thing leaves it to the players to take things into their own hands. (Note: don't piss off Dwayne Roloson.)
Nino Watch: We should know today if he stays or goes. After last night's performance (which Scott Gordon said will have nothing to do with the final decision) I'm personally thinking Nino may be better served being "the guy" for the Portland Winterhawks rather than fighting for icetime and perhaps eroding the young man's confidence.
We'll see.
Back to the Portland Winterhawks for Nino. Good kid. He'll have a good season there. We'll keep our eye on him.

Gordon: "They looked good, we looked bad."
No, he wasn't happy with his team's hard fought loss of 5 - 3 on Wednesday night in Montreal.
"We have to learn from it." Yes, they do. And quickly.
"The turnovers tonight -- all of them led to scoring opportunities." And score, they did. The line I warned about in the morning was the line that did damage. They just outskated the Islanders. Scott Gomez seemed to enjoy himself tonight and PK Subban made everyone sit up and take notice.
"The support all over the ice wasn’t good. I didn’t like it. We were an easy check tonight." Um, yeah. Scott really wasn't happy tonight. But at least he didn't take it out on Rob.
James Wisniewski had a 3 point game, even though Moen almost knocked him into Saturday. Moen received a boarding call and Wiz received help back to the bench after laying on the ice for a little while to catch his breath. He hardly missed a shift, but these are the Islanders. I wouldn't be surprised if we find out that Wiz will not be avialable for Friday's game with some sort of "spasm."
Gordon said he knew James Wisniewski's potential by the amount of points he had with Anaheim on the power play.
The Islanders gave up a short handed goal for the first time this season, but Dwayne Roloson stopped a penalty shot by Pouliet who crashed his crease after being taken down by martinek.
The Habs were faster and quicker. The game just got away from them.
It's a shame that this was Nino's 9th game so the decision needs to be made. Butch Goring believes they send him back where he can play on the PP as well as regular shifts. For Nino's own good and that of the team, Butchie said, they'll send him back.

Isles vs. Avs on ThrowBack Night

What year is it? Well, according to the ticket promotion it could be 1972. I offered to drag out my Janis Joplin costume for it but that was met with disdain. Eh, I'll still show up in something retro for the pre-game MeetUp at Doolans tonight. Stop by the Social Media desk if you're going and say hello.
So James Wisniewski gets back in the line-up tonight. I'm pretty sure the almost $80,000 payroll forfeiture stung more than sitting two games. As JR said, he probably should have just been fined for it. But, water under the bridge.
Trent Hunter will be missing tonight's action with a sore foot from Wednesday's game but John Tavares has been confirmed well enough to play tonight after his previous concussion on opening night.
Scary moment there for Blake Comeau yesterday when he hit the ice and stayed there after being blindsided by Letang. But he didn't miss a shift and had assist points on the two goals that were scored by Josh and Radek. Let's see what he does tonight.
Matt Moulson never got out his checkbook last night. Let's hope he needs to after tonight's game.
Rick DiPietro made some excellent saves last night, but he was also tossed around a few times and spent some time on his back like a turtle. Let's look for (Oh, please Scott let's) Dwayne Roloson who played exceptionally well his last game to be in net.
Johnny Z from Islanders Top Shelf and YES!Islanders.com will be there tonight along with OkposoNet's Ken Dick. The Islanders are now running Live Blogs during game nights on their main webpage. Check it out! That's where I'll be. Saves me the trouble since I am a techno jerk and can't figure out how to run one of those.
Also, make sure you check out the Stat Guy, Eric Hornick's game day info. Always very interesting. Impress your friends with details only the stat guy knows!
Okay then. See you tonight.

Isles @ Pens: Before the Puck Drops
12:19 PM: As a surprise Tweet, the @NYIslanders account has informed the faithful that it is Rick DiPietro in net tonight against Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh.
Oh. Brother.
I hear the Consol Energy Center is absolutely beautiful. But it hasn't been very kind to it's main tenant, the Pittsburgh Penguins. That may change tonight as the Islanders will face off with the team that has beaten them 14 times out of 18 in Pittsburgh.
Sidney Crosby should love seeing the Islanders as he has scored 61 points in 31 games against the Isles including a historic one for him on Uniondale ice.
This will not be an easy game by any stretch of the imagination. While the Islanders have numerous key injuries, out of the Pens line-up is Jordan Staal, Aaron Asham, Brooks Orpik and Zbynek Michalek. (Don't ask me to pronounce that.)
John Tavares should not be playing in this game, but may be available to play tomorrow for the "Throw Back" night at the Coliseum. Dwayne Roloson played incredibly well on Wednesday and would be a good call to stand in net against the Penguins. But of course, I am not Scott Gordon and we don't know if Rick will get the nod or not. (Personally, I'd hold Rick off until tomorrow.)
With James Wisniewski cooling his heels in the press box for another game, will Bruno Gervais get some game action tonight or will it be Jack Hillen getting another shot retaining a roster spot?
We'll have to tune in tonight at 6:30 pm for the MSGPlus pre-game show before the 7 pm contest. (Yankees are on at 8 pm? ugh. Wish I knew how to get the PIP thing to work~!)
And if you DON'T know about Throw-back night, check out the Isles main website where you can click to get tickets for only $19.72 for Saturday's game. Great value for a Saturday game.

Isles On The Road
Game preview for tonight at HockeyBuzz.
It will be interesting to see Scott Gordon's roster decisions today as to who replaces Wisniewski and who will be in net. It's like going to dinner and ordering the Chef's surprise. You don't know what you're getting until the very last minute.
Personally, I'm hoping for Hillen and Roloson.
I'm looking forward to trying out the new Hofstra radio webstream with Chris King tonight. I've heard the signal is clear and of course, Kinger is always a pleasure to listen to.
7pm start. I'll be joining in later.

The Wiz Sits
As per TSN's Bob McKenzie (whom I waited for to Tweet it out because I don't trust too many people) James Wisniewski has been handed a two game suspension for his inappropriate gesture on the ice in front of cameras.
James, save it for the parking lot or the tunnel where cameras are not allowed.
Jack Hillen or Bruno Gervais should get the shoulder tap from Scott Gordon to fill in the blank as they head to Washington and Pittsburgh.
And as luck would have it, it is Canadian media day for Islanders bloggers as I received a phone call from Team 1040 Vancouver (which can be webstreamed) who would like to talk to me tonight at 7:45 pm about our attendance woes. Opps... Pandora's box.

When The Maven Is There
The first night back is always special. Besides being the beginning of a brand new season, those who are regulars at the Coliseum get to renew their friendships with people they haven’t seen all summer.
Well, it’s that way with those who cover the game as well.
I don’t know why I didn’t think that the Maven would be in the building last night but I was pleasantly surprised to see him on the lower level in the MSGPlus lobby studio. It was 5:15 pm and he was holding court and noshing a sandwich before the cameras started to roll.
Islesblogger.com’s Mike Schuerlein, HI’s Tony Stabile and I checked into the Opening Night “Meet Up” for a few minutes before making our way upstairs. We rode the elevator with Newsday’s veteran writer Mark Herrmann. Considering Newsday hardly sends him to the Coliseum to cover the Islanders any more I was very happy to see him. (It means I won’t have to read an article about golf just to read him.)
The press box was full and everyone was renewing their acquaintance. Gary Harding was already in his seat, but it was the first time up there for both Tony and OkposoNet’s Ken Dick so I pointed them in all the important directions and then we went to our seats at the far end of the catwalk. The really, REALLY far end of the catwalk.
Howie Rose stopped me on the staircase and asked how my summer was. I laughed telling him I work for al living, I have no summer and then said something about the Yankees that made him grumble and walk away. (Oh, those Mets fans)
Also sitting with us, for the first time since 2007, was AOL Fanhouse’s Chris Botta. I had forgotten how intelligently he watches a hockey game and he had forgotten how jumpy I am. (Hopefully he doesn’t need his left arm today. Sorry about that Chris.)
With the final minutes of the game ticking down and a 4 - 3 score on the Jumbotron, we all packed up our laptops and waited to make the trek downstairs. But Matt Moulson decided he wasn’t done quite yet and tied the score at four with what Stan Fischler called “one hell of a goal.” The Maven asked Matt to take him through it.
“It was kind of sitting there. There were a bunch of opportunities, but we didn’t seem to be getting the bounces today. Doug Weight had me wide open in the back door and hit a skate on one end. But there were a bunch of chances on net and this one just kind of sat there. Luckily, it went in.”
Things are different in the post game when Stan Fischler is in the room. It’s HIS room and it’s not just because he’s holding the MSG microphone and the camera light follows him. (MSG’s Rob Carlin was in the room too and he stood back while Stan ran the show.) He brings out the best in anyone he’s interviewing, or should I say talking to. It’s more a conversation with Stan Fischler. There are jokes, there are smiles, there is a relaxed feeling in an open exchange.
He spoke with Rick DiPietro who laid blame on himself for the loss. Stan started with a simple “Your thoughts on the game.” but in a tone of understanding. DiPietro answered almost apologetically “It was a big point for us, especially after two bouncy goals right the power play.”
Stan then followed with “Gutsy performance.” Yes, the team pulled together after John Tavares left the ice and did not return. “Fantastic performance. I’m not sure we would have been capable of something like this last year. It goes to show you how we’ve grown and how our young guys have stepped up.”
When he asked Rick how he felt, he shrugged. “I felt pretty good. But that second goal is… I put the loss of the point on me and I have to be better….I would have liked to play better, but.. It‘s a work in progress”
As far as the shoot out goes, Rick said he was disappointed in himself for not being able to get that second point.
Knowing that Rick will not be practicing on Sunday, Stan asked if he would be taking on the Rangers in the Monday, Columbus Day matinee. Rick was non-committal but said he hoped so. “It’s still a day-to-day thing.”
That was basically the same answer Stan received from Scott Gordon from the podium in the new press room. “Day-by-day.” But Stan had to ask. He always has to ask Gordon questions he knows he won’t answer. But he also had him talking and laughing as well. Perhaps because it was game one or because Fischler was asking the bulk of the question, the usual three-minute coach’s recap lasted over eight minutes.
Gordon recognized the slow start of the special teams that managed to turn things around as the game progressed with three power play goals and the killing off of a 4 on 3 situation. Gordon thought before answering the question about Rick DiPietro’s play.
“Well, there’s only two goals that I know for sure that I saw and that was the first two. I can’t fault him on the third and the fourth one I believe was tipped. But I’d have to watch it. I’m sure he’d tell you he’d like the second one back.” (And he did.)
The elephant in the room was the condition of John Tavares after a collision with Adam Burish in the first period. Gordon repeated what had been previously reported that John sustained a mild concussion and would be evaluated on Monday. Concussions are a dangerous and strange thing. On a player as young as John, it could be debilitating or it could be nothing. This is the type of blow this team cannot afford right now.
Nino Niederreiter played 18 shifts and 11:27 in his first NHL game in front of his parents. Scott Gordon said that Nino was “…good. Much better than the games in exhibition.” Of course there are “minor things that he has to get better at.” as the youngest Islander player on the ice but he said “overall positionally he was strong and that he had a great release on his shot that “will eventually go in.”

Scott said that both Mottau and Wisniewski would have a big impact on the team. Wiz had a big impact on Jamie Benn as Ken Dick Tweeted out “Wiz just knocked Benn into next week. I should ask Benn who wins the AL pennant.” Benn returned to the bench seemingly not knowing his own name. Besides the big hit, Wiz had a goal and an assist as well. He couldn’t throw a fight in there and get the Gordie Howe? Okay, maybe with the Rangers on Monday.
And that is where all eyes will be focused: Monday. Will John Tavares be well enough to play? Will Dwayne Roloson get the start? Will the “Slap Shot line” of Gillies, Konopka and Sim make some memories?
We’ll have to wait until Monday to find out.

The Long Island Press featured an article in April called "Garth Snow's Summer "To-Do" List" written by Michael McEnareny. I actually used the article when I interviewed Mr. Snow in late April.
He admitted he hadn't read the article, but when I explained the five main items the fans wanted to see addressed in the off-season, he said he couldn't disagree.
They were:
1) Draft Wisely
2) Add size up front
3) Fix the Goaltender-go-round
4) Add nastiness at "D"
5) Find an Experienced Sniper
Continued here.
We're really missing a piece of the puzzle.

Sim-ply Surprised.
Lots of news over the Twitter feed today. Some upsetting: Wisniewski will wear #20 and some surprising: Jon Sim signs a one year two way contract.
It was a little surprising so my first reaction was a "WTF." Not because it was a bad thing, but more because it shocked me. I just didn't expect it. But let's remember that I was the woman who got called out on more than one occasion for being one of Jon Sim's biggest supporters. He was often called my "newest charity case."
But the guy works, and works hard. He draws penalties and annoys the daylights of players on the ice. He takes abuse and occasionally finds the back of the net. This isn't a bad thing.
The only bad thing? Jon, Shakey would like you to start wearing socks with your skates. He says they stink.
Reactions of today and more at HockeyBuzz.com But you can always leave your thoughts here.
I guess I'm glad I didn't get a #20 for my necklace. But this still sort of makes me sad. sigh.

Survey Says?!
It has taken me almost two hours to read only a portion of what everyone has been saying about Garth Snow's Friday night acquisition of ex-Duck James Wisniewski. So far the survey seems to say the deal was a steal.
Some thought provoking information about the roster was found at this installment of IslandersPointBlank, and I always leave it to my buddy Dom at LighthouseHockey to come up with all the useful information and web links. I don't know how he does it, but I love him for it. Dom took the time to scout out both sides to the Wisniewski signing. Like everything in life, there are ALWAYS two sides to the story.
I have personally had people come up to me and say how great a signing Wiz will be for the Isles this coming season. And I have also had some tell me of dirty hits and lack of character. I decided to contact someone a little closer to his old team and asked if there was anything I should know about James. The response I got was "He wanted more than we were willing to pay him. We have other plans."
Hmmmm...Not exactly what I was looking for, but a quote none-the-less. I was hoping for more insight into his personality or work ethic. But I see this will be one signing I will have to wait to draw my own conclusions about.
But no matter what I think, the overwhelming response has been positive. There was even a little Garth Snow Twitter love fest going on over the weekend, and surprisingly to some -- I didn't start it. But there were some great words of praise from writers and fans alike.
Does this mean that the Islanders will be play-off contenders this coming season? Who knows. So much can change from September's training camp to push for playoffs come trade deadline day. I'll just say that maybe the chances of making the playoffs are slightly higher than they were. Also, the Anaheim signing tonight of Andy Sutton to a two year deal ends the questioning about whether the big man would be back in Uniondale.
So while it seems the Isles swapping shot-blockers with the Ducks, their defense seems to be all worked out. However, I have read fans questioning who will be able to put the puck in the net. Well, some on the net do like to call the Isles GM, "Mr. August" so he may have one more trick up his sleeve.
I will reserve becoming familiar with all the names on the Islanders roster until September. But I should probably at least learn to spell a few of them, even if I can't pronounce them.
On a side note, I wandered over to the game used jersey tab on the Islanders main site. While a lot of the items are sold, I found some of the pricing a little on the surprising side. (i.e., stupid) John Tavares' jerseys are priced at $5,500. at first I thought it was a typo. Then I noticed that all his jerseys in each set were priced that way. I believe only one of them was sold. I am imagining that was John's father that bought it. Just a guess.
So... no other news to report as of yet. Perhaps another depth move this week. But other than the above, I've got nothing. I'm going to be spending the next two days working on another divisional article for another website. This one will be on goal tending. Oh... that should be interesting.
